The search
The record says that a man dreamt about the treasure for three nights. He then gathered other men and brought shovels, spades and a yard lamp. The group had begun searching when they heard what they took to be a bull roaring. The lamp went out and they ran, leaving the search unfinished. [1]
The story does not give a date, a map reference, a measured location or an independent account. It also does not identify whether the bull was seen. The lamp going out is the turning point in the narrative, but the archive does not establish whether it was caused by wind, fuel, a mechanical fault or something else.
Why preserve it?
Stories of hidden treasure often combine real landscape knowledge with inherited warnings about digging, darkness and trespass. Dreams provide the invitation; the failed search provides the ending. That structure tells us about the tradition even when it cannot tell us whether a cache ever existed.
