A Dúchas Schools' Collection page from Timahoe, County Kildare, preserves a story called “A Ghost Story - The Frog”. It tells of a cattle dealer returning from an Edenderry fair who was robbed and murdered, and of a ghost later heard making a sound like a large frog. [1]
The tradition
The record says the body was buried by a path and that people heard the ghost moving or flopping nearby. It also includes a detail about placing a stone on the grave to stop the sound. The account was collected from Maeve McDermott, who was listed as eight and a half years old, at Cooligmartin House, Donadea.
That provenance is important. The page preserves what was recorded from a child informant; it does not identify a contemporary police record, a named victim, a date, a newspaper report or an independently located grave. The story may have been inherited, adapted or told as a warning.
Fact, memory and place
Roadside ghost stories commonly attach danger to a particular route. A murder narrative can explain why a place should be avoided after dark, while a distinctive sound gives the story a memorable signature. None of this proves that the story was invented, but it means that the archive record should not be turned into a factual crime report without corroboration.
FI-X assessment
FI-X classifies the case as a Folkloric or cultural record. Its value is in documenting a local narrative and its source, not in claiming that a frog-like apparition was observed under controlled conditions. Further work would require historical records before any claim about the alleged crime or location could be made.
What remains unresolved
General Timahoe locality only. The archive story does not justify identifying a grave or encouraging visits to private land. FI-X has not independently verified every claim in this file. The classification will change only when better evidence supports a change.
