A 1976 RTÉ investigation spent a night testing reports of sounds, voices and apparitions at Marlay House in Rathfarnham. The controlled watch recorded no disturbance in the sealed room or marked floor.

Marlay House is valuable to FI-X because the archive preserves both the claim and an attempt to test it. RTÉ describes reports of sounds, voices and manifestations around the Rathfarnham building, followed by an overnight vigil involving presenter Mike Murphy and researcher Shelia St Clair. [1]

The test

The team placed microphones around the house, sealed a room with paper and tape, and scattered talcum powder on the floor. The aim was not to create an atmosphere but to leave visible or audible traces if something moved through the monitored areas.

By 10:30pm the seals and powder were still undisturbed, and the watch ended without anything untoward being recorded. The archive notes that St Clair considered the possibility that activity had happened elsewhere or on another night. [1]

The case has strong primary documentation for what the television investigation did, but it does not establish the earlier reports or explain them. FI-X classifies it as Probably explained in the limited sense that the controlled observation found no evidence of activity; the classification is not a claim that every historical story attached to the house has been disproved.
