Kilkea Castle in County Kildare has accumulated several layers of legend. An RTÉ archive item from 1985 records one specific account: a local couple reported hoofbeats and a dark horse-like figure near the castle. The value of the record is that it identifies the programme and the people interviewed. Its limitation is that it remains a short broadcast account rather than a controlled investigation.
The reported encounter
The archive summary describes Eamonn Farrell and his girlfriend Geraldine hearing horse hooves and seeing what appeared to be a dark horse, with something bright catching the moonlight. The figure moved towards the castle and disappeared. The programme also recorded a detail about the date: the couple checked it and found it was the fifth day of the seventh month, rather than the seventh day of the seventh month associated with one version of the castle legend. The programme connected the report with the local story of the Wizard Earl. That connection is part of the cultural history of the account, not evidence that the figure was the legendary character.
Ordinary possibilities
Night-time distance, a real horse, a person, reflective equipment, mist and the movement of a vehicle can all affect an observation. The archive entry does not provide a measured distance, independent photographs, weather data or a second contemporaneous account. Those gaps prevent a firm conclusion in either direction.
